One of the first jobs we finished was the addition of a second floor to a 10 year old home.
The original home was never designed to suit a second story, and our early sketches showing gabled and hipped roofs looked disappointing. In an attempt to blend the old and the new, we sat the second floor as low as possible within the existing roof. This avoided the "pimple" appearance of so many poorly conceived additions, and using the cedar weather-boards was in keeping with the 1980s style of the building. The flat roof offers a sleek contrast to the existing hipped roof, and makes no apology for being different.
